..And Not a Drop to Drink..?..

Just incase you don't check your mail, or the Mount Holly Water Department does just as good a job with their mailings as their bills and you never recieved it. Here is a notice telling you that the Trihalomethanes in our water are a little high. And have been since the testing cycle of July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2003. But don't worry, they will have it fixed within 90 days. And don't worry, some people who drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess over many years may experience problems with liver, kidneys, nervous system, and may have increased risk of getting cancer. But it isn't an immediate risk......big thanks to the Mt. Holly department for letting us know so quickly (just a hair over a year). Not to mention how fast they are going to correct it (90 days or so). So, everyone enjoy a big glass of poison (opps, I mean water) on me! And just incase you are not picking up on it, I'm being VERY sarcastic most of this post.

FYI Matt, the EPA states that THMs (trihalomethanes) be reported as a four quarter average not per sample thus the City of Mount Holly did not fully know until after June 30, 2025 that the THMs exceeded the MCL (maximum contaminant level). Also, it is important to note that given the excessive rainfall and runoff our area has experienced over the year it is not uncommon for these analytes to be somewhat higher than normal. The 117.5 ppb that was reported is not the worst in the state or in the area for that matter. So unless you work and play in Mount Holly you have no idea what you may be consuming. The water from your home could be the least of your problems. Like bottled water? They are far less regulated than your tap water! And they dont yet have to tell you what they find in the water unlike Mount Holly. If this is the worst thing they have to notify us of I would say they are doing a pretty good job. There are some things they could have done sooner to better control THM formation, and for their sake I hope they do as regulations get tighter for them in the new year, but given the system size Im not surprized or concerned by the numbers.

    well.......my post was funnier :)

Well, June 30 -> End of Sep when letters went out is still a pretty damn long time to me to notify people. And 90 days to fix it? You have to ask yourself something, do you think if this was of a greater health risk, the Mt. Holly water department would be a better job than 3 months to send out letters and 90 days to fix it? They can't even get their bills mailed out on time.

yeah they can't get your water bill to you on time, but if you are 1 day late BAM $10 on your next bill, 3 days late and your water is shut off. Even if you didn't recieve your bill on time.I guess the city is not slack collecting their money. My concern is my pets, how much is unhealthy for them. I guess my pampered poochies gets the ol' Brita filtered water

The EPA stipulates that for different contaminants, notices of violation be distributed by different methods and have different time lines. For example e. coli must be reported within 24 hours. So if it were of greater health concern then you would be notified sooner. As for the bills I would suggest speaking to a member of City Council. We have one living in the neighborhood. If your using a Brita pitcher it doesnt remove THMs. Its really only good for chlorine, sediment, and some metals. If filters are someting you are interested in you can visit the NSF web site and they will tell you what they have certified to use to remove various contaminants.

I manage and serve as the lead chemist for an environmental laboratory that does this type of testing as well as regulatory complinace consulting. By the way, for those concerned about the THM levels I did take a sample earlier in the week and the levels are down to 76.5 ppb. But remember that that number is just a picture of one moment in time and can and will change regularly depending of several factors. But because temperatures are starting to decline so too should the THM #s. Just FYI.

You are useful a guy to have around. Seriously, thanks for testing the water again. I have a family and the last thing I need to worry about is the safety of the water. And cooler temps should reduce the levels of THM? Well, that is good news as well.
