     Old News: Runnymeade ISP?
Posted on Wednesday, October 23 @ 08:48:48 EDT by Matt
    Contributed by: Matt

Are you currently paying for broadband internet service? Road Runner or DSL? Have you kicked the idea around of getting a broadband connection, but figured it was too much trouble or too expensive? Some of the tech geeks in the neighborhood have been kicking around the idea of providing wireless, broadband internet access to the whole neighborhood. The technology to accomplish this has dropped drastically in price over the last year or so. The installation would require you to put a wireless card in your computer, and that's pretty much it. The service would be secure and extreme fast. Faster than cable or dsl. Anyone interested in this? Just trying to get a feel if the neighborhood would be interested in looking at this. Matt

Count us in Matt, we are currently doing some research on Roadrunner and DSL because our contract is almost up on our dial-up connection, thank goodness. Just keep us informed on the progress so that we know what is going on before we enter into another contract.

    Matt,

This sounds like a fantastice idea. We are paying over $50 a month for DSL and internet connections. Can we maybe meet, the people who are interested, and learn some more information? I would love to do this, especially if it meant saving $$$!! Thanks, Matt!

Yep, we are talking about a full T1 or a fractional at the least. I don't want to get into hard numbers yet. Don't want to lauch a huge tech debate...but....on average....this doesn't go for all cable modems.....so don't flame me...a cable modem is usually locked down to 300-400 kps. That means that in a perfect world, when you click on a file to download, you should see the "little number" (as my mom calls it) get to around 300-400 kps (Download speed, 300-400 Kilobyes per second).

A T1 moves data at 1.5 Mps. (1.5 Megabytes per second). !Muy Rapido! Also, with just the neighborhood, say 250 con-current connections, it should't get too busy. Hell, we would have bandwidth for days!
